Voices from the Past
Authors in Conversation: Jane Dismore and Paul Walker, 1.00pm – 2.00pm Saturday 17 th
May at BEAM Hertford.
How do history writers bring the past to life? How do they connect readers with personalities and societies very different from our 21 st century world?
In this session, biographer Jane Dismore and fiction author Paul Walker talk about the challenges and rewards of telling stories from the past.
Jane Dismore’s new book No Country for a Woman: The Adventurous Life of Lady Dorothy
Mills, Explorer and Writer is the first-ever biography of the petite yet bold Dolly Mills, famed in the early 20th century for her brave expeditions into little-known countries and her fascinating,
often humorous travel books. Jane’s previous book, Tangled Souls: Love & Scandal among the
Victorian Aristocracy, focused on the ‘Souls’, an aristocratic group of writers, artists and politicians. who included Lady Ettie Grenfell of Panshanger.
Paul Walker is the author of highly successful Tudor mysteries: the William Constable series of spy thrillers, which are based around real characters and events in the late 16th century. In contrast, his latest book, A Turbulent Peace, is set at the end of WW1 when nations are struggling to find a way to lasting peace.
